Hello class,

The body is roughly eight heads that divides at the crotch.

Here is a summary of the measurements we went through in class.

Remember to look for the lines of lines of action and compression points.

If you have forgotten how to measure the figure, then I would recommend watching this video, it is similiar to what we went through in class. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cb3ad2mA8y4

You will need to do this weeks reading to be prepared for the exam, it breaks down the figure measurements and basic shapes in more detail.

This week we also introduced gesture drawing, you will need to know the difference between gesture and contour for the exam (and for journals) :https://claralieu.wordpress.com/2013/05/15/ask-the-art-professor-what-is-a-gesture-drawing/

wk7: Scale figures

Many of you are working on architecture / urban sketching theme for your journals. It is important to start practices putting people in your landscapes.  The following are from the book The Complete Sketch by Robert S. Oliver  which I would highly recommend for  location sketching techniques. These are sometimes called ‘paper bag’ people, they are fun to practice, and relatively easy to get the hang of (expect to draw a few hundred before they look right).   I find a marker is best for this but almost any drawing material can be used.

Wk7: practice drawing the figure

Hello class,

Many of you took the human figure as your subject. To really understand the human figure you must practice figure drawing. This is the art of drawing the nude figure from life. As attending figure drawing sessions is often not possible, I use the croquis cafe YouTube life drawing sessions. They also have very good short tutorials on specific topics like how to draw feet. I cast to my TV so I have a reasonably large image to work from, and voila my own figure drawing session in my living room.

Search croquis cafe to find figure drawing sessions recorded in real time.
