wk8: Big Picture – two approaches

Hello class,

In very general terms we have look at drawing from two approaches, one is “point-to-point” and the other is structural.

Here are a couple of notes from class that captured this discussion.

wk8: Composition Process

Hello Class,

Week 8 we looked at composition through the lens of creating a dynamic balance of light, mid and dark tones across the entire composition with an awareness of separating fore, mid and background within the picture plane. It is expected that students already bring to the class an understanding of basic composition principles such as the Rule of Thirds, creating balance and having a focal point.

Techniques apply equally to cinematography, many great cinematographers started out as painters.

Excellent example of the process and planning that we went through in class. For your journals you should have several thumbnail sketches that explore different compositions, including placement, framing, balance and dynamic contrast of tone.  You should also explore mixing approaching and integrating what we have learnt in the first part of the course.

Notice how the details in the foreground and background make for a more interesting image.  Your eye moves through the work taking in details, forming a story of the event.
